Building 2 Research Renovations
Tampa, FL
The Project is designed to meet LEED Silver certification.
MRI and TLC provided architectural-engineering design for the complete renovation of approximately 65,576 GSF of the VA’s existing research building from antiquated individual small laboratories to new state-of-the-art larger flexible laboratories. Design includes the gutting and subsequent build out of the ground, first and second floor of Building 2, the abatement of asbestos from this entire area, new air and water distribution, electrical service and branch circuitry, and improved infection control parameters to minimize disruptions to current facility requirements.

MRI introduced new Universal Laboratory concepts and presented ways of economizing spaces and using shared support spaces. Universal Lab concepts had to comply with VA standards, which were integrated into the design. The MRI/TLC design team addressed code compliance issues including lack of fire sprinklers, removal of hazardous waste/asbestos containing material (ACM), insufficient air changes, shortage of emergency power, and replacement of compromised duct work and non compliant architecture spaces.
